Alliance for a Better Community is a group of concerned citizens, organizations, and officials working together for the common goal of improving the quality of life for our North Pacific County families and youth.

2020 Executive Summary

Alliance for a Better Community (ABC) has been a helpful non-profit serving the community since 2004.   Our attitude of helpfulness stems from responding to community needs.  When the community speaks, ABC listens and takes action.

As an update to what has happened so far in the year 2020, our efforts have been limited, but not halted by the Covid pandemic.  Our meetings are few and, for now, only for the ABC Board.  We do not have the technology for zoom meetings so we keep the public aware by our email contact list.  The major 2020 project of the Job Fair was cancelled in March, but the playground project rekindled with the partnership of the City that agreed to take care of the administrative portions of property lease, liability insurance, and maintenance of the playground footprint at the Riverview Center.  Raymond City match of concrete and other needs are a big help also.

With this important piece taken care of, ABC went to work to find funding for the play system.  We thank all the funding supporters who helped make this happen.  The finance pieces were fulfilled as follows:

  • The budget submitted to the grant funders included community support of $1,000 – This was surpassed after investing in an ad and the corresponding article to the Harbor Herald. The public support was just above $1,200.
  • The Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund supported the project with a $10,000 grant.
  • The Cheney Foundation surpassed our grant request by increasing the funding to $15,000.
  • The LV Raymond Foundation awarded a match to Cheney for another $15,000.
  • Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc. had already contributed $2,000 in 2018.

This supplied sufficient funding for the quote from Buell Recreation of about $43,000.  ABC had budgeted a cushion amount also for any unexpected expenses. 

As the Job Fair had to be cancelled in March, ABC applied to the county for a Covid Relief grant offered through the CARES Act.  ABC was awarded $10,000 which will be applied to form a project by engaging with WorkPlace Excellence for books or materials to better prepare the high school students to enter the job world.  If Covid closes the schools, it is permitted to use the funds at al later date when challenges are more minimal.
